Former racing driver Alan Shaw (Bruno Lawrence) now drives a tow truck and owns and operates the titular auto-wrecking yard in New Zealand. He still races cars when he can.
Al took over the business when his father died, planning on selling it immediately, but has grown to love it and won’t sell.
His frustrated wife Jacqui (Anna Maria Monticelli, appearing here as Anna Jemison) hates the business and the fact that Al spends all his time with his cars and his eight-year-old daughter, Georgie (Greer Robson-Kirk) and none with her.
Her displeasure drives her into the arms of his best friend, a copper called Ray (Keith Aberdein), and when she leaves her husband, taking his daughter with her, Al cracks up and kidnaps his daughter at gunpoint, fakes their death, and hides in the woods with her.
