The 2008 satirical action comedy Tropic Thunder follows a group of self-absorbed actors attempting to film a high-budget Vietnam War epic in Southeast Asia, based on the memoirs of grizzled, gravelly-voiced Vietnam veteran Four Leaf Tayback (Nick Nolte).
Tugg Speedman (Ben Stiller, who also directed the film) is a fading action star desperate for a “serious” role to revive his career after the failure of his Oscar-bait film, Simple Jack.
Kirk Lazarus (Robert Downey Jr.) is a five-time Oscar-winning Australian method actor who has undergone controversial “pigmentation alteration” surgery to play a black sergeant, refusing to break character until after the DVD commentary has been completed.
Jeff Portnoy (Jack Black) is a comedy star known for lowbrow humour who is secretly battling a severe drug addiction.
Alpa Chino (Brandon T. Jackson), a closeted gay rapper, is attempting to cross over into acting while promoting his “Bust-A-Nut” candy bars and “Booty Sweat” energy drinks.
Dedicated newcomer Kevin Sandusky (Jay Baruchel) is the only actor who is actually prepared for the role.
When their pampered behaviour threatens the production, the frustrated director, Damien Cockburn (Steve Coogan), decides to drop the men in the middle of a real jungle to force authentic performances through “immersive realism”.
Cockburn is killed when he accidentally steps on a real landmine shortly after dropping the actors off. Clueless and believing it is a special effect, Tugg convinces the group to continue “filming”.

The group unknowingly wanders into the Golden Triangle, territory controlled by the Flaming Dragon drug cartel – led by Tran (Brandon Soo Hoo), a fierce, cigar-chomping 12-year-old – who mistake the actors for DEA agents and capture Tugg after he becomes separated from the group.
While Tugg is tortured and forced to perform scenes from Simple Jack for the drug lords, the remaining actors finally realise the danger is real.
They must now set aside their egos to launch a rescue mission using their acting skills and prop weapons.
The actors infiltrate the drug compound and rescue Tugg, narrowly escaping across a bridge rigged with explosives by SFX man, Cody (Danny McBride), as they are chased by the cartel.

They are eventually saved by Tugg’s agent, Rick Peck (Matthew McConaughey), who arrives unexpectedly in the jungle.
Back in Hollywood, the footage captured by hidden cameras is compiled into a documentary-style film titled Tropic Blunder, which becomes a massive success. Tugg finally wins his first Academy Award.
The film features a notable cameo by Tom Cruise as Les Grossman, a foul-mouthed, hot-headed studio executive who oversees the production from afar.
