In 1984, Andy Partridge teamed up with fellow XTC members Dave Gregory and Colin Moulding (with Gregory’s brother on drums) to create a psychedelic band – the pseudonymous Dukes Of Stratosphear.
Their record label wasn’t keen, but they persevered, and in two weeks had recorded their debut release, the 25 O’Clock mini-album.
The fakery behind the paisley disguise was soon exposed, and most fans soon realised it was XTC who had recorded this amazing tribute to the psychedelic era.The mini-LP sold over 90,000 copies in the UK – as opposed to XTC’s then-current album, The Big Express, which moved less than 40,000.
It was such a success that the Psonic Psunspot album followed. Highlights included Vanishing Girl,
