Australian band The Hippos came together in Sydney in 1985. At the heart of the group was rock journeyman Leszek (Les) Karski, formerly of UK outfit Supercharge, who settled in Australia after Supercharge broke up.
Karski hooked up with bass player/vocalist John Power (ex-Jo Jo Zep and the Falcons), keyboardist Bridie King, saxophonist/percussionist Ian Jones and drummer Ace Folington – all virtuoso musicians – to form The Hippos.
The band’s debut single, Dark Age (1988) was taken from their superb debut album Hippocracy.
Unfortunately, the follow-up album Hippocalypse (1989 was poorly received and following several lineup changes – including the departure of Karski to form The Bondi Cigars – the band released a third and final album, Creatures From The Black Lagoon (1993) and called it a day.
