Formed in Melbourne in 1982, this eccentric Australian band was named after the militant Painters & Dockers Union.
One of their early gigs was in a Melbourne pub frequented by waterside workers, and since the band did not yet have a name, Painters And Dockers was chosen for the occasion. The name stuck.
Their first recording (Mohawk Baby) was released on independent label Au Go Go Records’ compilation album, Asleep at the Wheel in 1984.
They released their debut album, Love Planet on Big Time, soon after.
The album spawned the single Basia! (1985) – a paean to Basia Bonkowski, the presenter of the Australian music television show, Rock Around the World.
Painters & Dockers became famous for absurd stunts, such as performing naked covered in dead fish or playing on the back of moving trains across Melbourne stations for a government initiative called ‘Rockin’ the Rails’.
The title and subject of their 1987 Top 30 single Nude School (from their second studio album, Kiss My Art) were inspired by a true story of a teacher in the US who established a school where all the students had to take their lessons in the raw.
The group disbanded in 1998. They reformed in 2014.
