Australian band The Town Criers formed in Melbourne in 1964. Their first single, a cover of The Kinks‘ The World Keeps Going Round, was released on the local independent label Trend but didn’t make any impression on the local charts.
The band reached the Top 10 in 1968 with their cover version of Everlasting Love but had difficulty repeating the success.
Founding vocalist Andy Agtoft was replaced in 1969 by Barry Smith from Adelaide, but The Town Criers had called it a day by 1971
Smith went on to a band called The Alroy Band in the 1970s.
