The Weather Girls, Martha Wash and Izora Armstead, started out in the gospel group NOW (News of the World) before becoming backup singers with Sylvester in the 70s.
They formed the duo Two Tons of Fun, later changing their name to The Weather Girls and recording in the early 80s. The girls enjoyed a massive worldwide hit in 1983 with It’s Raining Men.
Wash later went on to do session singing and was the uncredited lead vocalist on You’re My One and Only (True Love) by Seduction, Everybody Everybody by Black Box, and Gonna Make You Sweat (Everybody Dance Now) by C&C Music Factory.
Wash was invariably replaced in the songs’ videos (because of her weight) by lip-syncing models and was forced at times to resort to legal action to get a proper share of the royalties for her work.
