Despite their name, granny glasses were a fashion statement of vibrant youth. Also known as Ben Franklin glasses, the specs actually first started appearing in 1963.
They adorned such famous faces as Roger McGuinn of The Byrds (who actually claimed credit as creator of the glasses) and John Lennon and rapidly became a must-have mod fashion accessory.
With their half-size rectangular lenses, granny glasses looked just right with a baggy, ankle-length granny dress.
Within about two years, however, the trend was dead.
