Emily Kimbrough and Cornelia Otis Skinner co-wrote a book called Our Hearts Were Young and Gay about their funny, real-life adventures on a post-graduate fling in Europe after they both graduated from Bryn Mawr College, and their eventual search for careers after settling down in New York’s Greenwich Village in the Roaring 20s.
The title of the book was shortened for this CBS sitcom – to simply Young and Gay – when it debuted on New Year’s Day 1950. After only two episodes the title was again changed – this time to The Girls – for the remainder of the show’s short run.
Writer Emily Kimbrough was played by Mary Malone with actress Cornelia Otis Skinner originally portrayed by Bethel Leslie until she departed to work opposite Helen Hayes in a play called The Wisteria Trees. She was replaced for the few remaining episodes by Gloria Stroock.
Also in the cast was Kenneth Forbes as Todhunter Smith II.
