Open to families of four (quite often teachers and their egg-headed offspring), Ask The Family was a surprisingly durable early-evening intellectual quiz show.
Owlish chairman Robert Robinson fired off a succession of riddles, mental posers and general knowledge questions, some directed to “children only”, “mother and younger child”, “father and elder child” or other combinations of contestants.
The winning family then stayed on and progressed through the annual knock-out tournament.
Sixteen families per series were selected to compete on the programme.
Ask The Family was revived on UKGold in spring 1999, with the series screened later that year on BBC1. Gardening guru Alan Titchmarsh was the new host.
