1 9 6 4 – 1 9 6 5 (USA)
26 x 30 minute episodes
Widower Sam Bailey (Paul Ford) is the captain of the Island Princess (CF 2122 AW), a decrepit charter fishing boat docked at Bailey’s Landing in Balboa Beach, California.
Commander Cecil Wyntoon (John Dehner) is his neighbour, commodore of the high-class Balboa Yachting Club.
Cecil objects to the lower class Sam and his noisy boat – which he considers an eyesore – and the series relates the bickering relationship between the two.
Complicating the issue are Cecil’s daughter, Barbara (Judy Carne), and Sam’s beachcomber son, Jim (Les Brown Jr) who are lovers struggling to survive a romance that both of their fathers frown upon.
Buck Singleton (Sterling Holloway) is Sam’s inept and forgetful first mate. Stanley (Clint Howard) is Sam’s young friend.
Also appearing frequently was John Banner as Hans, who worked for Wyntoon at the Yacht Club. An occasional visitor was genius cousin Chester Bailey (Michael J Pollard).
26 black & white episodes were filmed at CBS Studio City. Sponsors included Reynolds Metals, American Home Products, and Philip Morris Cigarettes.
The show was pummeled in the ratings by Peyton Place on ABC and Hazel on NBC.
