This six-part serial for children from Associated-Rediffusion was written by Howard Wiliams and Barry Pevan, and directed by Jim Pople.
The Owens family – David (Kevin Stoney) and his wife, Anne (Stoney’s real-life wife Rosalie Westwater), and their children Donald (Diarmid Cammell) and Mary (Shandra Walden) – inherit a remote island off the coast of Scotland in the will of Mr Owens’ wealthy aunt.
When they arrive to take up residence, they encounter a hermit named McGhee (Ralph Nossek) and have their first experience of the mysterious “blackness” – a curious black mud that oozes everywhere.
It soon becomes apparent that there are other people on the island besides the family and McGhee, and subsequent episodes were packed full of cliffhangers involving broken radio transmitters, strange glowing lights, a midnight prowler, a foreign submarine and the Royal Navy.
The serial aired on Tuesdays between 17 January and 21 February 1961.
