Lancastrian comedian Norman Evans first starred in Evans Abode on Saturday 10 November 1956, in the BBC’s Saturday Comedy Hour slot.
In one segment, Norman portrayed a fat, bespectacled old boarding house landlady with Jon Pertwee as her eccentric, grandiloquent lodger, a ragged Shakespearean actor.
Other guests included variety hall entertainer Betty Junel, “gin-soaked old tart” Mrs Shufflewick (female impersonator Rex Jameson), the Littlewood Songsters, the Television Toppers and Norman’s singing daughter, Norma.
The show returned on 8 December and then 18 May and 15 June the following year.
