The Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC) produced these dramatic stories revolving around a scientific investigation unit called ‘Delta’, loosely based on the CSIRO (Commonwealth Scientific and Industrial Research Organisation).
The ‘Delta’ organisation was an independent, non-profit research organisation that assisted individuals or groups – including industry, the farming community or government bodies – and were, in effect, scientific trouble-shooters.
The Delta team utilised mobile laboratories and the latest scientific instruments and equipment to tackle any problem – from industrial espionage to disease, drought and bushfires – anywhere in Australia.
The two lead characters in Delta were scientist Jeff Mallow (John Gregg) and his assistant Inger Petri (Kirrily Nolan), members of a mobile field team and typically the frontline staff in any assignment. Kevin Miles played super-efficient scientist Brian Fitch.
The second series added Patsy Trench as rebellious scientist Jackie Stuart.
The series had a large budget and featured extensive location shooting, and was produced entirely on film at a time when most local productions were using an integrated film and videotape combination.
