Based on the best-selling novels The Elusive Pimpernel and Eldorado by the Baroness Orczy, this BBC Sunday afternoon children’s series premiered on 20 April 1969 and starred Anton Rodgers in the titular role as the very English hero of the French Revolution.
Sir Percy Blakeney – Regency buck one moment, undercover man and scourge of the revolutionary agent Citizen Chauvelin (Bernard Hepton) the next – was courageous, quick-witted and tough as steel under his protective disguise of languid foppery.
His self-imposed task was to cheat the French Revolution of some of its noblest victims, rescuing French aristocrats from under the blade of the guillotine.
The mysterious Englishman known as the Scarlet Pimpernel angered the revolutionary government in France with his daring rescues.
Robespierre (Jimmy Gardner) had ordered Chauvelin to destroy the Pimpernel.
The 10-part serial was dramatised by John Hawkesworth.
