This BBC2 miniseries – directed by Rex Tucker – debuted on 10 May 1969.
The hero, Michael Fane (Brett Usher) is inspired as a child by the adventures of Don Quixote. The book, with its nightmarish illustrations, disturbs his sleep at night and fills him with chivalrous intentions by day.
Despite a horrid fatherless childhood with an absentee mother (Jeanne Moody) and an alcoholic Nanny (Angela Baddeley), Michael grows to adolescence the perfect young gentleman, all apparently due to the constant and kindly influence of governess Miss Carthew (Jo Kendall), who goes on to marry Captain Ross (John Golightly).
