Targeted at young people, the French language Canadian series Sol et Gobelet was written by Luc Durand and Marc Favreau, who were also the two main actors in this show.
Naive, childlike Sol (Favreau) and Gobelet (Durand) were a pair of clowns (and accomplished mimes) who shared a wacky apartment in Montreal, where all kinds of kooky things would happen.
Sol and Gobelet were a veritable small-screen phenomenon in Canada in the late 60s and early 70s. At one point, nearly a million TV viewers were regularly watching Sol et Gobelet.
When the series came to an end, Marc Favreau took his Sol character to the stage, beginning in 1972, where Sol became a stand-up solo performer who subtly made his audiences reflect upon the human condition with a rich and relentless play on words.
Luc Durand dies on 2 July 2000 following a battle with cancer. He was 68. Marc Favreau died on 17 December 2005 (also of cancer), aged 76.
