“It’s time for The Young Set. Today’s ideas, today’s stars, today’s minds. The Young Set with your host Phyllis Kirk and the music of Ray Martin and His Orchestra. And ladies and gentlemen, here is our lovely host, Miss Phyllis Kirk.”
This hour-long weekday talk show from ABC typically featured at least three people under the age of 35 discussing a variety of topical – and sometimes provocative – subjects. The moderator, actress Phyllis Kirk (pictured), was 39 at the time.
The debut show featured a conversation with the family members of celebrities, including Richard Burton’s first wife, Sybil Burton Christopher, Charlie Chaplin’s son Sydney Chaplin, Dorothy Kilgallen’s daughter Jill Grossman, and Rex Harrison’s son, singer Noel Harrison.
Other guests included Christopher Plummer, Woody Allen, Barbara Feldon, Helen Gurley Brown, Marlo Thomas, Peter Falk, Salvador Dalí, Lena Horne, Joan Rivers, and Ray Bradbury.
After debuting on 6 September 1965 the New York-based show was gone by mid-December, replaced by Supermarket Sweepstakes and The Dating Game.
