This drama series from Granada Television (written by Julia Jones) examined the liberation of a bored housewife and the effect of her newfound freedom on her family and herself. Gillian Raine starred in the lead role as Brenda Wort.
42-year-old Brenda has been married for 21 years and has grown-up children and a large home with many labour-saving devices.
Her husband, Godfrey (comedian Tony Melody), runs a garage, and the family lives very comfortably. But life for Brenda is maddeningly dull. When her somewhat spoiled and selfish family leaves home in the morning, Brenda wanders aimlessly around the house, wondering how to escape from the suffocation of twenty-odd years as a housewife.
It seems the answer lies at the other end of a telephone call to the Employment Exchange.
Encouraged by her old school friend Agnes (June Brown), Brenda takes an office job and – freed from her matrimonial prison – finds that a business trip to Poland brings a broader view of the world, and she takes a new look at her marriage.
With her boss, Winslow Scott (George Sewell), placing increasingly more responsibility on her, Brenda further evaluates her life while visiting her elder son, Walter (John Arthur Barron), at York University.
Brenda eventually moves into a flat of her own, but the strains of trying to be both a housewife and a working woman are still growing.
Her family are anxious to know what Brenda plans to do, and she realises she cannot put them off any longer.
