Set in New Zealand in 1860, Hunter’s Gold revolves around 13-year-old Scott Hunter (Andrew Hawthorn), who becomes anxious about his gold-prospecting father (Bruce Allpress) when his personal belongings return home without him.
Scott heads off to Tucker’s Gully in search – spurred on by his unsympathetic uncle – and, en route, has various adventures, including clashes with robbers and encounters with a band of Chinese and a flamboyant travelling showman called Marvello The Magician.
On arriving at Tucker’s Gully, Scott finds that his father’s colleague has been found murdered. Scott’s father – whom no one has seen for some weeks – is the prime suspect, and there is a price on his head.
Scott ultimately discovers that his father has struck gold and is being held prisoner by the real murderers, Ryan (Bevan Wilson) and Dodd (Peter Thorpe).
He then sets out to convince the folk of Tucker’s Gully of the truth.
