Set in 1757, this BBC series was a lovingly faithful treatment of the original Victorian novel by American author James Fenimore Cooper.
Well cast and well-acted (there were no Native American actors in the UK at the time, so John Abineri, Richard Warwick, Philip Madoc and other white actors were made up in brown makeup for the roles) the series was filmed at Glen Affric near Cannich in the Scottish Highlands, which stood in remarkably well for the forests of the American east coast.
A complete fort was built out of plastic sheeting on a wooden frame. Ten sequences were shot there in two days, and then it was dismantled.
The series aired in America as part of Masterpiece Theatre.
The BBC produced a five-part sequel – Hawkeye The Pathfinder – in 1973.
