This ITV stop-motion animated children’s television programme was produced and directed by Brian Cosgrove and Mark Hall and narrated by Richard Briers (who also voiced all the characters).
The series featured 25 stories featuring Enid Blyton’s classic Noddy and his Toyland pals, including the wise, bearded 100-year-old brownie (gnome), Big Ears, who lived in a toadstool house and served as Noddy’s protective, fatherly mentor; Noddy’s kind-hearted best friend. Tessie Bear; Tessie’s highly energetic, boisterous pet, named Bumpy Dog (true to his name, he constantly knocked over characters and objects out of pure excitement); and no-nonsense Toyland policeman Mr Plod, who patrolled the town on his bicycle, keeping a watchful eye on Noddy’s driving and constantly threatening to lock up troublemakers.
Other characters included Noddy’s next-door neighbours the Tubby Bears: Mr Wobblyman (a toy man with no legs who constantly rocked back and forth to move around); Miss Pink Cat, a fussy, neat, and elegant cat who owned the local shop and spoke with a high-class accent, and the the local Toyland milkman, Mr Milko, who delivered milk to the residents each morning from his cart.
Enid Blyton’s original mid-century books had included elements that became socially outdated, so the 1975 version replaced the controversial Golliwog garage keeper with a French character named Monsieur Polly.
The main antagonist of the series was Gobbo – a sneaky, thieving goblin who lived in the Dark Woods and spent his time plotting to steal Noddy’s yellow and red car.
Cosgrove and Hall later returned to the character under their renamed studio (Cosgrove Hall Films), producing the 1992 BBC adaptation, Noddy’s Toyland Adventures
