For the first time in its 60-plus-year history, Disney Studios, long the king of animation in motion pictures and TV specials, entered the Saturday morning fray in September 1985 with two shows, The Wuzzles on CBS, and this NBC animated series about six magic bears who leave their community to help an 11-year-old castle page called Cavin in the medieval kingdom of Dunwyn.

The mythological bears, with names like Zummi, Grammi and Cubbi, befriended the human youngster to help fight evil in the real world.

Grammi Gummi’s own Gummiberry Juice gave them the strength to combat a variety of foes ranging from trolls to evil nobles.

A sense of sly humour permeated each adventure and helped keep the show from the saccharine excesses of The Smurfs.

Adventures Of The Gummi Bears – created to cash in on the popularity among American youngsters of a candy confection of the same name from West Germany – was a tremendously successful series, holding the #1 position in its time period on Saturday mornings for five years.
