65 x 30 minute episodes
Molly Dodd (Blair Brown) was a thirty-something divorced woman living in New York and facing the comedy and drama of a widely changing career, difficulties of apartment living, and a complicated love life.
Molly (maiden name Bickford) first worked for Dennis Windmer (Victor Garber) and Associates Real Estate, then in a bookstore run by Moss Goodman (David Straithairn).
Molly lived in Manhattan, and episodes followed events in her life as she sought the meaning of life while realising that her biological clock was ticking. To earn extra money, Molly taught piano on the side.
Other regular characters included Molly’s saxophone-playing ex-husband Fred (William Converse-Roberts), her mother Florence (Allyn Ann McLerie), her father Edgar (Richard Venture), her sister Mamie (Sandy Faison), her brother Dwight (Darrell Larson), Molly’s roommate Birmanyi (Kabir Bedi), Davey McQuinn (James Greene) the building elevator operator, Nick (Jay Tarses) the garbage man, musician Steve Cooper (Peter MacNichol), Molly’s friend Nina Shipman (Maureen Anderman), her cousin Mike Sayles (John Glover), and her music student Katherine (Tanya Fenmore).
The show – from the creators of The Bob Newhart Show – moved to cable (Lifetime) after two years on NBC.
