Patty Duke and Richard Crenna starred as Sam and Molly Quinn; two hard-working career people just too busy with their careers (as a doctor and a lawyer respectively) to pay attention to each other or their teenage children, Lisa and Andy – played by future stars Helen Hunt and Anthony Edwards in early acting appearances.

Molly works as an Assistant District Attorney and is a woman who gives of herself to help others. She believes that everyone is entitled to a fair trial – even those who break the law and who she must prosecute.

However, if she feels uneasy about a case and personally believes a wrong was done, she turns pseudo-defence lawyer and digs deeper into the facts. On occasion, she sides with the defence team entirely.

Sam is the chief of surgery at the Rush-Thornton Medical Center.

Also living with the Quinn’s in Manhattan is Molly’s elderly and somewhat senile mother, Anna (Billie Bird), who is fondly called “Mama”.

Bird recalls of her two young co-stars; “I found Helen to be an extremely energetic actress. I admired her talent. But I was particularly fond of Tony. He was the neatest young guy in the world – polite, well-mannered and a gentleman.”
