22 x 30 minute episodes
Not to be confused with the 1990s George Clooney series, E/R is set in the fun-filled emergency room of the Clark Street Hospital in Chicago where Dr Howard Sheinfeld (Elliott Gould), an ear, nose and throat specialist, is moonlighting to keep up with alimony payments to his first wife and the separation payments to his second wife.
Receptionist Maria (Shuko Akune) is ordering pizza and Fred the cop (Bruce A. Young) is making a date with Maria.
Jerry the drunk is sleeping it off in Bed 1. Head nurse Thor (Conchata Ferrell) is telling Dr Sheridan (Mary McDonnell) why Dr Sheinfeld is chronically exhausted. Nurse Julie (Lynne Moody) is being typically industrious and the float nurse from paediatrics (Corinne Bohrer) is being typically confused.
Meanwhile, Dr Sheinfeld is on the phone with his second wife, Phyllis (Patch Mackenzie), from whom he’s getting divorced. She’s already got the car, the house and the Rodney Dangerfield records. Sheinfeld insists on keeping the dog, Godiva.
Nurse Thor can’t believe he wants the dog; “I thought you hated it.”
Sheinfeld: “I do. But Phyllis loves it, and the one thing that’s more important to me than love and hate . . . is spite.”
