Fresno was a rarity in television programming: a comedy miniseries. The six-hour, $12-million production was a very effective parody of prime-time soap operas like Dallas and Dynasty.
Set in Fresno, California, it told the tale of two warring raisin dynasties.
The once-wealthy Kensington family’s raisin-growing empire had fallen on hard times, and widowed matriarch Charlotte (Carol Burnett) was locked in a deadly power struggle with rival raisin magnate Tyler Cane (Dabney Coleman).
Charles Grodin played Charlotte’s evil JR Ewing-alike son, Cane, with Teri Garr as his sexy nymphomaniac wife Talon, who lusted for the farmhand, Torch (Gregory Harrison), who strode through the entire miniseries without a shirt on.
Peripheral plots included the nefarious presence of the Acme Toxic Waste Dump (run by Mr Acme, of course) and the annual Raisin Festival Masquerade Ball – the setting for the grand finale.
