Malcolm MacGruder (John Getz) is a patrol car officer with the LAPD. Jennifer Loud (Kathryn Harrold) is his partner.
Jennifer, however, is not only a police officer but married to Malcolm and living a lie. Departmental rules prohibit married couples from working together and, to continue to be with each other on and off the job, they quietly married, concealed the fact from officials and have even rented separate apartments in the same building.
Malcolm lives in Apartment 2A at 165 North Veranda. Jennifer resides in Apartment 2B. While off duty and certain that no one will catch them, they actually live in Malcolm’s apartment (the bookcase in Malcolm’s apartment has been secretly converted into a revolving door to allow access to both apartments).
Jennifer, who likes to be called Jenny, is the more sensible of the two – both on and off the job. Jenny likes to patrol at a steady pace and avoid any confrontations. Malcolm is more action-oriented.
Stories relate their efforts to perform as a team and keep their marriage a secret.
The series was produced by Aaron Spelling and was heavily hyped, but after premiering to high ratings following the 1985 Superbowl, its ratings quickly dropped, and it was cancelled three months into its run.
