When recently-widowed Molly McCaskey (Nancy Walker) loses her money and is forced to leave Florida, she moves to New York to live with her 40-year-old bachelor son, Jake (Bruce Weitz from Hill Street Blues), who writes a column called “McCaskey” for the Manhattan Examiner.
Jake relishes his bachelor lifestyle and his privacy and would like to be able to deal with the situations he faces at work and with his friends in his way, but his mother still sees him as her little boy and feels obligated to help him.
Stories follow Jake’s efforts to manage his mother’s attempts to run his life.
Agnes (Grace Zabriskie) is Molly’s sister. Officer Mickey Ryan (Dan Hedaya) and Lucky (James Cromwell) are Jake’s friends. Victoria (Susan Blakely) is his editor.
NBC did not know what to do with the series and scheduled it erratically, airing once a month (the network called it a “designated hitter”). Thirteen episodes were produced, but only five aired.
