Newlywed twenty-somethings Kathy (Maggie O’Neill) and Martin (Reece Dinsdale) have just relocated from London to a new housing development in a Midlands new town. Her husband has coerced Kathy into an abortion, and she is feeling lost and unloved.
By chance, she meets Tom (Keith Barron), a middle-aged taxi driver who has been driven from his skilled job as an engineer at the local lawn mower factory by modern technology. He lost his confidence along with his job and is depressed by the monotony of his 25-year marriage to Liz (Annette Crosbie) and his life in general.
An unlikely liaison follows – a sexually and emotionally intense affair which is born of shared loneliness but inevitably leads to complications and heartache.
Annette Crosbie is an utter joy as Liz, outwardly cheerful for her increasingly distant husband, and concerned and supportive when his behaviour towards her changes, yet heartbreaking in the role of the wronged and bewildered wife.
The three-part BBC miniseries aired in May 1989.
