    Itsy Bitsy Spider, The

    Share
Facebook Twitter Pinterest WhatsApp Reddit Email

    1 9 9 4 (USA)
    26 x 13 minute episodes

This simple cartoon series revolved around a young purple four-eyed spider named Itsy (voiced by veteran voice-over man Frank Welker) and his efforts to avoid the spider-hating Adrienne Van Leydon (voiced by Charlotte Rae) and her muscle-bound sidekick, the Exterminator (voiced by Matt Frewer) – a gung-ho “bug killer” who is determined to rid his life of the defiant itsy bitsy spider.

Itsy also had to avoid Adrienne’s lazy, cranky cat, Langston.

Adrienne and the Exterminator seemed to turn up everywhere Itsy went – whether it was a haunted house or a hospital, a wrestling tournament or a spaceship.  And they were more than happy to demolish any environment in their unsuccessful efforts to squash the clever little spider.

Helping Itsy escape this team of crazed arachnophobes was Leslie McGroarty (Francesca Marie Smith), a tough neighbourhood tomboy who understood that everyone – even itsy bitsy spiders – needed love and protection.

Amongst the guest voices were Rose Marie and Morey Amsterdam (from The Dick Van Dyke Show), Dan Castellaneta (The Simpsons), Laura Leighton (Melrose Place), Claudia Christian (Babylon 5) and Liz Sheridan (Seinfeld).

The series was based on a 1992 short film of the same name, which featured Jim Carrey as the voice of the Exterminator.

Yes, one of the great presenters. R.I.P.

For fans of the radio series Round The Horne (1965 - 1968) - starring the inimitable Kenneth Williams - there are several full episodes on Spotify. Some of the humour is still pretty close to the edge, even by modern standards. Bona!
