After serving two and a half years in jail for accidentally shooting her cheating husband Sonny (D. David Morin) in the butt, Connie Drego (Stephanie Hodge) returns home to the motel-cum-service station she owns in rural Michigan (“Drego’s Oasis”), which her older daughter Madeline (future Friends star Jennifer Aniston) has been running in her mother’s absence.
Connie desperately wants to pick up the pieces of her life and try to do it right this time, but that won’t be easy with her wild and uncontrollable younger daughter Kerri (Aimee Brooks) now well into puberty, Sonny still living in one of her rooms, and her bright Madeline married to Duane Cooper (Scott Waara), the naive state trooper who arrested her.
Gidney (Hal Landon Jr) and Lyle (Hank Underwood) were regular diner customers.
It was a by-the-book sitcom from CBS, and both Aniston and Hodge would go on to do bigger things.
