40 x 30 minute episodes
1994 saw several rip-offs of the hit daytime show Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, including this low-budget entry that ran in the late afternoon on the USA cable network.
The alien fighters were handsome preppy Gordon Henley (Richard Nason), stuck-up cheerleader Laurie Foster (Leslie Danon), middle-class Drew Vincent (K. Jill Sorgen), and Swinton Sawyer (Rugg Williams), a nerdy black kid who was also a computer genius.
The four had been recruited by Nimbar, a bloblike entity (voiced by Glenn Shadix), to become Galactic Sentinels and fight to save the universe from the evil Emperor Gorganus (voiced by Ed Gilbert).
Normally they hung out at school or at the Cafe Maison coffeehouse, but when their secret tattoos began to glow they would leap through a ‘power portal’ into Nimbar’s cavelike headquarters, get their orders, and then transform themselves into Sentinels by shouting their code names (“Scorpio! Taurus! Centaur! Apollo!”).
Then, clad in tight-fitting Lycra, they would do battle with Gorganus’s monsters in a fantasyland of bright colours and flashing lights.
Although they had various types of laser guns, the emphasis was on kicks, flips, and karate – and when the going got really tough, they could lock arms and transform themselves into Knightron, a mighty combination fighter (pictured above left).
Lechner (voiced by David L. Lander) was Gorganus’s sarcastic pet bird.
