1 9 9 4 – 1 9 9 5 (UK)
14 x 30 minute episodes
Kenny Conway (cheeky cockney comedian Brian Conley) is fresh out of prison after serving nine months for stealing cars.
He returns home to his mother (Kate Williams) and vows to go straight – a prospect she, his younger brother Robbie (David Shane) and his best pal Jake Brewer (Richard Graham) regard as the biggest crime of all, and the entire Bermondsey criminal community seem determined to stop him doing so.
The only person on Kenny’s side is his probation officer, Gillian Walcott (Samantha Beckinsale, following in the comedy footsteps of her late father, Richard), with whom Kenny falls in lust.
Episodes dealt with Kenny’s struggle to find (and keep) a job while avoiding the criminal goings-on around him and juggling his feelings for Gillian with his relationship with long-term girlfriend Donna (Georgia Allen).
This better-than-average LWT series – spawned from a 1993 pilot comedy called Outside Chance – won ‘Best ITV Situation Comedy of the Year’ at the 1994 British Comedy Awards and returned for a second series in April 1995.
As the second series closed, Gillian was seeing her married colleague Mike Tredwell (Neil McCaul) and audiences saw Kenny walk down the aisle with Donna.
