This NBC comedy series featured Michael Weiss (Michael Landes), a lawyer turned playwright who hung out at Union Square, a gritty diner in downtown Manhattan.
Stories followed his experiences with his friends, an assortment of odd characters who also hung out at the diner.
Short-order cook Jack Pappas (Jim Pirri) is an ex-con and a ladies’ man (or so he thinks); Susan Barkley (Harriet Sansom Harris) is a realtor with Barkley and Barkley Realty who uses the diner as her office; Gabby Diaz (Constance Marie) is an aspiring actress; Albie (Jonathan Slavin) is the doofus counter man; and Carrie the waitress (Christine Burke) is in a band called Binge/Purge.
Despite being scheduled between Friendsand Seinfeld, the show was plagued with problems from the beginning when lead actress Mel Gorham was fired after the pilot was poorly received and replaced by Constance Marie.
The critics panned it from the off, calling it the place “where pathetic cultural stereotypes converge to speak loudly and carry a big shtick” and saying it had “all the wit and charm of a pepper-spray canister.”
