Anthony Anderson stars as, essentially, himself: a guy who wants to be an actor, raising his son, Tuga (Damani Roberts), alone.
He moves back in with his parents, the tough dad (John Amos) and the sweet, wisecracking mom (Roz Ryan). They’ve rented out his bedroom to a white guy (cue laugh track).
Can Anthony make it as an actor, or will he be forced to work at his dad’s barbershop – or both?
Nail-biting, is it not? At least Anderson’s attempt to write about family seems sincere. He loves his son, relies on his mother and is trying to figure out his tough-love father.
This is sitcom as emotional affirmation of values, with awwwwww moments galore, cut hard with plenty of sour one-liners. Formulaic? You bet it is.
