This strange cartoon series from Filmation was originally created for broadcast in Germany but aired on NBC on Saturday mornings during the summer of 1979.
The title character (voiced by Lane Scheimer, who was the son of Filmation producer Lou Scheimer) travelled to Earth on the orders of Sporticus XI (Frank Welker), the leader of the planet Olympus – a twin of the Earth located on the opposite side of the Sun – to ensure fair play in games with no interference from the crafty Queen Vanda (Joyce Bulifant) and her henchman, Sipe (Frank Welker).
Accompanied by his girlfriend, Sport Lilly (also voiced by Joyce Bulifant), and his talking dog Willy, Sport Billy used his common sense and the contents of his magic gym bag (the “omni-sack”) to accomplish his mission and promote sportsmanship and physical fitness to home viewers.
The character of Sport Billy was originally a European comic character that was also popular in Latin America.
