The main purpose of this movie is to showcase the Jerry Lewis-style antics of its star, Canadian comic Jim Carrey.
He plays an inept but sometimes accidentally successful Miami-based pet detective – a modern-day Doctor Dolittle who goes to work when a bottle-nosed dolphin called ‘Snowflake’ – the mascot of the Miami Dolphins football team – is kidnapped just before the Superbowl.
Ventura is hired by the team’s marketing manager, Melissa Robinson ( a pre-Friends Courtney Cox) but finds his investigation hampered by the forces of law and order who don’t want him anywhere near the case (or his client), represented here by Lt Lois Einhorn (Sean Young).
He eventually has to rescue Dolphins’ quarterback Dan Marino too.
There are lots of clever sight gags which would be easier to take if Carrey didn’t work so hard to beat us into submission.
Carrey appeared in a 1995 sequel – Ace Ventura: When Nature Calls – and an animated TV series followed in 1996 (without Carrey).
