In a Florida community, a local trapper sees a couple of giant monsters in the swamp, but nobody believes him.
Later, general store owner Dave Walker (Bruno VeSota) finds his wife, Liz (Playboy centrefold Yvette Vickers), cheating on him with his friend Cal Moulton (Michael Emmet).
He chases the couple through the swamp and forces them to jump into the water. The giant leeches take them, and – in a state of shock – Dave is arrested and accused of murder.
Two other locals decide to look for the bodies of Liz and Cal to get the sheriff’s reward of US $50.00 per body, and also vanish in the swamp.
Finally, game warden Steve Benton (Ken Clark) organises a patrol to investigate the caves under the swamp, finding the lethal giant leeches.
The film was shot in eight days – including outdoor sequences at the Los Angeles County Arboretum and Botanic Garden – for $70,000 (which explains the dreadful giant leech costumes). It was executive produced by Roger Corman and produced by his brother Gene.
The body of Yvette Vickers was found at her home in Los Angeles on 27 April 2011. It is believed she died several months before her body was discovered. She was 82.
