Young Chicago nerd (and virgin) T.T. (Dennis Christopher) arrives on the Californian coast intending to pay tribute to his dead brother and decides to make a new life for himself there.
Barman Duke Slusarski (Seymour Cassel) offers him a place to stay as he tries to work out where he fits in, but the arrangement is complicated by his feelings toward his host’s daughter, Corky (Glynnis O’Connor).
Meanwhile, Stephanie (Tanya Roberts) tries to get hedonistic boyfriend Rick (John Calvin) to mature and commit to her, and mechanic Earl (Ned Wynn) tries to win a vintage car and the heart of a gold-digging waitress by living inside his clunker for six weeks.
