Young Elizabeth Cronin (Ashley Peldon) has an imaginary friend called Drop Dead Fred.
Imaginary friends are usually nice little boys and girls. But not Drop Dead Fred (the late comedy genius Rik Mayall), who is selfish, destructive, foul-mouthed, filthy-minded and has a passion for mischief. But he’s terrific fun.
Together, he and Lizzie – who he calls “snotface” – get into all kinds of trouble, like redecorating the kitchen with chocolate cake.
As Lizzie grows older (and turns into Phoebe Cates) she forgets all about Fred after her parents lock him up in a jack-in-the-box.
But when her marriage breaks down and she loses her job, her car and her purse all in one day, she returns to her childhood home – and her overbearing mother (Marsha Mason) – and lets Fred loose to help sort out her life.
Cue loads of jokes about poo, bogies and doing it like pigeons, and everything descends into hilarious chaos once more.
The duo set out to win Lizzie’s cheating husband, Charles (Tim Matheson) back and Fred will stop at nothing to succeed – and have some fun along the way. But since nobody but Elizabeth can see Fred, she gets the blame for everything and soon her very sanity is called into question.
The interior sets were built and filmed at Prince‘s Paisley Park Studios in Minnesota.
