This made-for-television movie presented John Mortimer’s dramatisation of a novel by John Fowles.
Brash young art critic David Williams (Roger Rees) goes to interview Henry Breasley (Laurence Olivier), an elderly once-famous English painter who lives in a remote farmhouse in the south of France with two young women – former art students Anne (80s pop star Toyah Willcox) – known as “The Freak” – and Diana (Greta Scacchi) – known as “The Mouse”.
Williams gets caught up in the painter’s Bohemian lifestyle during his two-day visit, forcing him to reexamine his own attitudes towards life and art.
