The Chantays – from Orange County, California – were launched upon the world by Dot Records after label boss Randy Wood heard their debut single Pipeline (1962) and bought it for the label.
The song reached #4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was followed by the group’s first LP, also titled Pipeline (1963).
At the time, the group members were still attending Santa Ana High School in California.
Brian Carman died at home in Santa Ana on 1 March 2015 from complications of Crohn’s disease. He was 69.
