Pint-sized Sharon O’Neill was one of many musicians from New Zealand who made Australia their base during the 1980s.
Hailing from Nelson in the South Island of New Zealand and starting out in a high school folk group, Sharon already reigned supreme in her home country and had cleaned up most of the top female awards.
She introduced herself to Australian audiences when she supported Boz Scaggs in 1980 and did a few performances of her own.
She released some fine singles including Words (1979), How Do You Talk To Boys? (1980), Waiting For You (1981) and Maxine (1983) and the albums This Heart This Song (1979), Words (1980), Maybe (1981), Foreign Affairs (1983), Danced In The Fire (1987) and Edge of Winter (1990).
In 1981, she composed five songs and incidental music for the New Zealand film Smash Palace.
In 2005, 2006 and 2007 O’Neill toured Australia as a support act for Leo Sayer and a collection of her greatest hits was released by Sony Music Australia under the title The Best of Sharon O’Neill.
She also toured as part of the ‘CountdownSpectacular 2′ concert series and on the ‘Let It Be’ Tour (a Beatles tribute show).
