In 1955, the doyen of the dahlia, Percy Thrower, set off down the garden path for a 12-year run of Gardening Club.
The show – the forerunner of today’s many gardening programmes – was originally broadcast from a rooftop garden at the BBC’s Lime Grove studios, where Thrower offered useful advice to growers nationwide.
He was joined each week by specialist guests and enthusiastic amateurs.
With the arrival of colour television, Gardening Club gave way to Gardeners’ World, again hosted by Percy Thrower.
