Canadian Gene Lockhart made the transition from the big screen to the small screen in this sitcom in which he portrayed the kindly and mild-mannered Justice of the Peace, Judge Homer Bell of Spring City, a (fictional) midwestern town – population 75,000.
Bell had a good heart and would do almost anything for folks in need, although he also had a flock of trying relatives and neighbours to contend with.
The principal thorn in his side was his 15-year-old tomboy niece, Casey (Mary Lee Dearring), whose faculty for jumping headlong into anything and everything kept her uncle busy in the rescue department.
Jane Moultrie played Gene’s faithful housekeeper, Maude, who managed to keep things on a fairly even keel and hid a warm heart behind a dour facade.
Gene Lockhart (father of actress June Lockhart) died less than two years after the show’s demise.
