This long-running daily New York children’s TV series from DuMont was hosted by Pat Meikle, whose husband, Hal Cooper, wrote and produced the show.
The Magic Cottage was located “in the land of make-believe, where anything can happen, and most everything does, where storybook people come to life and tell you their adventures, and where every boy and girl can have fun, play games, and receive some beautiful presents.”
Miekle would draw characters on an easel (a favourite was Wilmer the pigeon) and bring them to life with magic words.
The blend of fairy tales, games, prizes and drawings ensured the show’s popularity. The show also featured original songs with valuable lessons about life.
At the peak of its popularity, the show – which had a live audience in the studio (in Manhattan’s Wanamaker Department Store, where Captain Video was also made) – received an average of 10,000 ticket requests a week from children. The allotment was eight a day!
