6 x 30 minute episodes
These six self-contained studies in crime were written by Berkely Mather, who had recently penned the successful BBC anthology series Tales From Soho.
Throughout the episodes – which aired on Saturday nights – Mervyn Johns played J Philimore Sparkes, a gentlemanly crooks’ outfitter. In each play, he was abetted by an old lag called Kegworthy (Harry H Corbett). The pair were joined by Milton (Carl Bernard) in the third episode, ‘On Hot Ice’ (15 September).
Other characters who appeared in several of the stories included Detective Inspector Welsh (Colin Tapley) and Detective Sergeant Spence (Richard Hayter).
The debut play ‘Hitched to a Star’ (which aired on 8 September 1956) starred Alfie Bass and William Devlin playing two financiers involved in some share-pushing.
