One of ITV’s most outstanding early serials, The Schirmer Inheritance was adapted from an Eric Ambler novel. Episodes were filmed at the Television Theatre in Aston, Birmingham for ABC, and aired on Saturday evenings in August and September 1957.
Young lawyer George Carey (William Sylvester) is sent to Europe to find the rightful heir for the £4 million Schirmer inheritance among the many false claims and dead-end leads.
He is assisted by glamorous interpreter Miss Kolin (Vera Fusek) (who has an astonishing capacity for brandy) and caustic senior partner Robert Moreton (Jefferson Clifford).
George begins his search in Bonn, where a clue in the regimental archives leads them to Father Weichs (Gerard Heinz) and Frau Gresser (Irene Handl).
Subsequently, their search brings them into contact with Colonel Chrysantos (Elwyn Brook-Jones) and the smooth Captain Streftaris (Paul Stassino) and involves them in a hold-up. Ultimately, George’s survival relies less on his training as a lawyer and more on what he learned in the military during WWII.
Through a series of twists and turns – and narrow escapes – George finally manages to dispose of the inheritance.
