This stand-alone one-hour drama presented a dramatised documentary-style look at the young men of the rock ‘n’ roll era who found a new and more adventurous life for themselves in the Teddy Boy fraternity instead of the church-organised community youth club in the East End of London.
A new clergyman (Edward Cast) arrives from the Midlands and takes over the club. He then tries to attract boys and girls who other clubs have rejected – among them a small but vicious gang of lads known as “the Wharf Road Mob”.
Anthony Newley and Melvyn Hayes starred as two of the teenagers.
Written by Colin Morris and produced and directed by Gilchrist Calder, the BBC production was broadcast on Thursday 28 March 1957, at 8.30 pm.
